Jake and Sarah’s Story

Recovery

Jake and Sarah’s #GivingTuesday Story    —    About the Mental Health Association in New Jersey’s NJ Connect for Recovery Helpline

For People Coping with Addiction to Heroin and Prescription Painkillers

I called to try to get help for my granddaughter, Sarah, who was using drugs. I convinced her to get on the phone herself. She reluctantly listened to the Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor on the line, who, calmly and patiently listened and spoke, posing key, thought-provoking questions. A few days later, I called back to say the conversation incited my granddaughter to seek treatment. Sarah also called back and asked to speak to the counselor. She shared that, as a result of her call, she made the decision to enter a rehabilitation program and planned to continue to call the line for support. I still appreciate their phone support and will continue to call throughout the journey through recovery. (Based on a real situation.)
