(CSP-NJ) Self- Help Centers Principles

  1. Self-Help involves peer/mutual support, mutual respect, care, and hope for self and others. Centers provide an environment where members feel accepted, connected, and valued which enhances healing and recovery.
  2. The experiences of those working through their own recovery are great resources. Active role modeling and support of peers in the daily operation of the Center prepares participants to manage life stressors and symptoms leading to recovery and wellness.
  1. Consumers benefit from meeting and connecting with people who have similar challenges due to life situations and psychosocial stressors. The Self-Help Center environment provides a comfortable and relaxed setting where consumers gather, interact, and gain a sense of belonging to improve their quality of life.
  2. Consumers have rights and responsibilities and can be "empowered" through "opportunities". Leadership roles and skills consumers’ developed in management of Center’s operations enhance ability to manage life in the community.
  1. Empowerment promotes self-direction, self-determination and personal control that is critical for well being. Decisions over center operations and activities promote opportunities to grow personally and assume greater leadership roles in the center and the wider community.
  1. Active pursuit of advocacy initiatives can be an empowering experience. A consumer who is involved in efforts towards positive change may be able to exert greater control over behavior and gain a greater sense of life satisfaction.
  1. Self-help Center participants support the identification and development of personal strengths and abilities. This is a key to self-esteem and self -growth. The planned groups and resources provide opportunities to identify and realize aspirations, satisfy needs and learn to cope effectively with their environment. This can help a person enhance/develop personal self care, academic, vocational and leisure/recreational skills.
  2. The individuality of participants at a center and the unique qualities of each Center throughout the state should be valued. Local consumer leaders and participants should analyze, plan and organize the environment, activities and groups so the local Center is responsive to and reflects the needs, preferences and desires of local participants.
  1. Self-Help Centers value and promote consumer and professional partnerships. Professionals are involved upon request to guide and coach members to develop structure, monitor operations and the environment. These partnerships allow the consumer leaders to promote the mutual aid self-help ideals to benefit consumers throughout the state.
